Get Disinfected Bedding and Uniforms

As a vet you know that your practice is not immune from the risk of hospital acquired infections and these are occurring more and more. Therefore it’s vitally important that you continually review your infection control procedures which include the washing of clothes, bedding and blankets. There is real need to make sure that you have a process for ensuring that all laundry is washed and disinfected to kill bacteria and reduce any spread of infection such as MRSA.

Sometimes this aspect of infection control can be overlooked, with a belief that a hot wash in a domestic washing machine will help to disinfect your veterinary laundry.  This is simply not the case. You need to use machines that have a dedicated thermal disinfection programme to ensure you are killing bacteria.

WRAS Compliance

In addition to making sure that your bedding and uniforms are free from bacteria, the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) states that those fluids which it rates as Category 5, that carry a significant health risk must be disposed of in the correct way.

This means that if your current washing machine that you are using to wash soiled bedding has not been designed to ensure that the waste water cannot flow back and contaminate the fresh water supply then you are probably not WRAS compliant and you could be served with a improvement notice which could see your practice closed until you get the appropriate washing machine in place, or adjust your onsite plumbing to the required standard.
